Zapion was founded by percussionist Eric LaPerna, who specializes in Middle Eastern drumming and named the group after a Greek tavern frequented by his mentor Udi Alan Sharash Bardezbanian. Performing Middle Eastern fold, classical, Sufi and art music, Zapion draws from the rich traditions of Turkis, Arab, Armenian, Iranian and Balkan music.
